Start with the job you need the platform to do
MCP Market and Skillfully overlap in paid agent skills, but the comparison changes depending on whether you need a storefront, a team’s library of agent tools, or a paid version of an expert’s method. Those are three different purchasing decisions.
MCP Market has a skills directory, paid listings, a seller offering, and MCP Market Hub for managing skills and tools. Describing it as merely a free directory misses its current scope. Skillfully publishes paid skills for authors and experts who can reach their audience, with managed access inside a connected AI workspace.
This article is published by Skillfully. Public sources were reviewed on September 30, 2026, alongside relevant Skillfully implementation. We did not complete an MCP Market purchase, seller onboarding, or Hub synchronization test. Features attributed to MCP Market are vendor descriptions rather than independently verified behavior.
Compare the three purchasing decisions separately
The MCP Market skills page combines discovery categories with premium listings. Its seller page describes importing or uploading a skill, setting a price, publishing a storefront listing, and tracking revenue. It describes direct downloads and synchronization through Hub. A buyer does not have to be shopping for an MCP server to find an agent skill there.
MCP Market Hub is a related but distinct proposition: creating and versioning skills, connecting tools, assembling toolkits, and sharing them across a team. Its advertised team administration is relevant to internal workflow management. It should not automatically be treated as the licensing model for every paid marketplace listing.
Skillfully starts with an author’s method and reader audience. Publishing is application-based; the product is not an open discovery marketplace. Its paid access can serve individuals or team arrangements, but that does not make it a general-purpose replacement for an organization’s entire agent-tool stack.
| Your main job | MCP Market | Skillfully |
|---|---|---|
| Find a skill by task | Public skills discovery and premium listings | Reach a particular author’s offer |
| Sell a standalone package | Seller storefront with download and Hub distribution described | Discuss whether the method fits author publishing |
| Standardize internal agent tools | Hub describes versioning, toolkits, and team sharing | Focuses on access to published expertise |
| Deliver an expert method to readers | Can list a suitable skill product | Central publishing use case |
| Confirm commercial terms | Seller FAQ states 20% commission and a required Pro account | Confirm author terms and the specific offer |
The useful comparison is between the workflows you will actually use. Counting every feature across a vendor’s website can create a misleading result.
A directory, a storefront, and an entitlement are different things
A directory helps a buyer find a product. A storefront explains the offer and takes them toward purchase. An entitlement determines what the account may access afterward. You need all three questions answered even when one provider supplies several of the pieces.
For a downloaded skill, ask what the buyer receives and what updates they can obtain later. For a connected skill, ask how the agent discovers the current accessible version. For a team, ask which person owns the purchase and how a colleague receives legitimate access.
Skillfully’s integration documentation describes listing the user’s accessible published skills, reading manifests and runtime-safe files, and submitting feedback after explicit confirmation. The page supplies the connection entry point and a way to verify available skills. That is useful evidence about the intended access path; it does not certify every client configuration or every possible buyer journey.
Do the same practical check for MCP Market. Choose a representative paid listing, read its buyer terms, and establish how direct download differs from Hub synchronization. A claim about keeping files current does not, by itself, tell you what happens after a refund, a team member’s departure, or an expired commercial agreement.
When MCP Market is the better fit
MCP Market deserves serious consideration when your buyer starts by searching for a task, and your skill is understandable without knowing you. A developer seeking a repository-specific utility may care most about compatibility, installation, examples, and the update path.
Hub is also relevant when the problem is operational: several employees maintain copies of a workflow, and an administrator wants a shared way to distribute skills and tools. Evaluate that as an internal platform purchase. Check account permissions, local modifications, version rollback, and credentials using your own environment.
For these jobs, Skillfully’s author-oriented publishing process may add an unnecessary conversation. An expert-method publisher and a team infrastructure manager solve different parts of the ecosystem. You can need one without needing the other.
Marketplace discovery still requires a product people can evaluate. A long list of claimed capabilities makes a listing harder to trust if the buyer cannot tell which concrete task it solves. Prefer a short demonstration, explicit prerequisites, and a clear account of the output.
When Skillfully is the better fit
Consider Skillfully when people already seek your particular method through a book, course, workshop, newsletter, or consulting relationship. You want them to use that method on their own situation inside their AI workspace, and you expect to improve it over time.
That starting point affects product design. A generic task label may be less useful than an explanation of where readers usually get stuck and how your sequence of questions helps. The buyer needs to recognize the method and understand the limits of the assistance.
Skillfully’s publishing model also assumes the author can reach readers. Do not include an imaginary volume of marketplace traffic in its business case. Plan the actual introduction: an existing workshop follow-up, a relevant newsletter explanation, or a direct offer to an appropriate customer.
The recurring offer must earn its place after the first use. If the task happens once and the output remains useful for years, a continuing subscription needs a better rationale than “the platform supports it.” Planning a maintenance schedule helps make that obligation concrete.
A worked example: internal workflow or external product?
Imagine a fictional research agency. Its operations manager wants twelve staff members to follow the same source-checking procedure. Its founder also teaches a distinctive interview method to customers and wants to turn that method into a paid skill.
For the operations manager, the acceptance test is about consistency. Publish a revised procedure, have two staff members use it in their usual clients, and check which version they receive. Then remove one test user’s permission and verify the intended access behavior. Hub’s documented team features make it a relevant candidate for this evaluation. This example is a proposed test, not a result we observed.
For the founder, the test is about the customer experience. Can a reader arrive from the offer, connect their account, find the correct skill, and conduct a useful interview preparation session? Can the founder improve a confusing step and have the next session use the revision? Skillfully’s publishing model is relevant to that second problem.
The agency should resist buying one platform simply because both projects contain a SKILL.md. The internal workflow has an administrator and employees; the external product has an author and paying customers. They have different support, licensing, and accountability needs.
A procurement worksheet that exposes the differences
Before choosing, write a one-page answer to each of these:
- Who finds the product, and through which specific channel?
- Who pays: an individual reader, a purchasing manager, or an internal administrator?
- What exactly is delivered: a file, synchronized package, or connected access?
- What happens when the author releases a corrected version?
- What happens when a buyer leaves a team or requests a refund?
- Which support problems belong to the creator and which to the provider?
- What commercial terms apply to this account and product?
The MCP Market seller FAQ, including its published page data, states a 20% commission on sales and requires a Pro account to list. Confirm the current Pro price, payment-processing treatment, and refund rules before calculating your total cost. We also do not publish an invented standard Skillfully commission. Compare actual agreements and include support labor in both calculations.
For a broader vendor shortlist, use agent skills marketplaces compared. For the work before listing, see how to sell a SKILL.md. Choose MCP Market for the marketplace or Hub job you have verified. If your project is an author’s method for an existing audience, bring a concrete example to the application on Skillfully.
