What Is an Agent Skill?

A practical definition of agent skills, how they differ from prompts and tools, and why reusable workflows need feedback loops.

What an agent skill is

An agent skill is a reusable package of instructions, context, and optional resources that helps an AI agent complete a specific job more reliably. Unlike a one-off prompt, a skill is meant to be reused, improved, measured, and maintained over time.

That distinction matters for two groups in particular: developer relations and technical enablement teams that need repeatable workflows other people can adopt, and experts or operators who are turning hard-won know-how into skills other people can run.

A simple way to remember the difference is this: a prompt asks for an answer, but a skill defines a repeatable job.

Why the category exists

The category is no longer theoretical. OpenAI's Codex documentation describes agent skills as a way to package task-specific capabilities with instructions, resources, and optional scripts so an agent can follow a workflow reliably. Microsoft Copilot Studio also uses the language of skills to describe reusable capabilities an agent can call inside a larger workflow.

Skillfully's own guide material points in the same direction: a useful skill should help the agent complete a repeatable job with less ambiguity every time it runs. That is already a stricter standard than simply writing a better prompt.

This shift matters because the packaging layer is changing. For a while, most people thought in terms of models, prompts, and tools. Skills sit one layer above that. They tell the agent how to combine instructions, context, and capabilities into a workflow another person or another agent can use again later.

Agent skills vs prompts

A prompt is usually a single request for a single situation. A skill is a reusable operating procedure. In practice, a skill usually carries more structure than a prompt: expected inputs, what to inspect first, completion evidence, stop rules, and a way to collect feedback after the run.

  • Use a prompt when the task is one-off, low-risk, and easy to evaluate manually.
  • Use a skill when the work repeats, when multiple people or agents will use it, or when you want a way to improve it over time.
  • Use tools alongside skills when the agent needs system capabilities, not just workflow guidance.

For example, 'Summarize this meeting transcript into five bullet points' can be a perfectly good prompt. But 'Turn this sales call transcript into a structured account brief with objections, next actions, and a follow-up email draft' starts to look like a skill because the workflow repeats and the output can be evaluated against a known shape.

The difference is not whether the text looks sophisticated. The difference is whether the artifact is designed to be reused and maintained.

Agent skills vs tools

Skills also get confused with tools, especially in technical agent stacks. A tool gives an agent a capability. A skill tells the agent how to use capabilities to complete a job.

For example, an MCP tool might let an agent read a repository, call an API, or fetch a dashboard. A skill might explain when to call that tool, what to inspect first, what evidence to collect, and what a good final output should look like.

This distinction matters because many teams already have tools. What they often lack is procedure. The missing layer is not capability. It is repeatable workflow design.

What a good agent skill contains

A good skill is not just detailed. It is operational. The strongest skills define the job, name the inputs the agent can trust, point to the fastest truth path, require visible completion evidence, and state when to stop or escalate.

In practice, that usually means five components appear again and again in strong skills.

  • A clear repeatable job that can be described in one sentence.
  • Inputs the agent can trust, such as file paths, URLs, IDs, transcripts, or account context.
  • A fastest truth path that tells the agent where to look first instead of forcing it to guess.
  • Completion evidence that can be shown outside the agent's own confidence.
  • Stop rules and boundaries so the task does not expand into unrelated work.

This is the difference between a nice-sounding instruction and a real workflow asset. If another person on the team still needs extra oral explanation to use it, the skill is probably under-specified.

A simple checklist for judging a skill

Before you publish a skill, ask whether it can survive contact with someone other than its author. A practical checklist helps keep the standard honest.

If the answer is no to several of those questions, you may still have a useful prompt. You probably do not yet have a strong skill.

Examples for both Skillfully audiences

The category becomes easier to understand once you look at concrete workflows for the two audiences Skillfully is targeting.

For developer relations and technical enablement teams, a skill might package workflows like reviewing a pull request against an internal migration guide, instrumenting a feature using the team's event taxonomy, generating a reproducible bug report from logs and traces, or importing a repository's skill files into a standard publishing layout.

For experts and operators making skills, the workflow might be turning a founder interview into a positioning brief, turning a sales call into objection patterns and follow-up actions, turning a research task into a memo with sources and caveats, or turning a hiring interview into a structured scorecard and recommendation.

These examples matter because they show that skill-making is not just for engineers. Many of the best skills come from operational expertise that already exists inside a company. The hard part is making the workflow concrete and reusable.

Why skills should be treated more like products

This is where most people under-model the problem. Writing a skill is only the first step. Once other people or other agents use it, the real questions begin: where does it fail, what prerequisite was missing, what instruction was too vague, which contexts break it, and which edits actually improve future runs?

That is why the best skills need post-release feedback loops. A prompt is often judged once. A skill gets judged repeatedly. Repeated use changes the maintenance model. It starts to look less like writing copy and more like maintaining a product surface.

  • Publish a version.
  • Observe what happens in real runs.
  • Collect structured feedback.
  • Patch the failure mode.
  • Run the skill again and compare outcomes.

Skillfully's own internal long-form framing is useful here: many skill creators are still shipping blind. They may have a benchmark result, a few GitHub issues, or a strong feeling about the wording. They often still do not know what happens after the skill is used in a real workflow. That is the gap between writing and operating.

Common mistakes and FAQ

The most common mistake is treating a skill like a motivational paragraph. Some skills sound inspiring but do not tell the agent what to do first, how to know it is done, or when to stop. Other common mistakes include making the scope too broad, hiding the important instruction in the middle, and omitting any visible proof of completion.

Another common mistake is trying to squeeze an entire department's worth of judgment into one skill. Skills work best when they define a repeatable slice of work, not when they try to replace every decision a human expert might make.

That also explains why the best skills often come in sets. One skill handles drafting, another handles review, and another handles publish or escalation. Breaking work into reusable units usually makes the system easier to trust and easier to improve.

Is an agent skill just a markdown file? Not really. A markdown file is one possible format, but the useful part is the reusable procedure inside it. In many ecosystems, a skill can also include linked files, scripts, examples, or structured resources.
